SS Writer
A native Markdown editor for Windows 11.
Overview
A native Markdown and plain-text editor for Windows 11, written in Rust on Win32, Direct2D and DirectWrite. Markdown is rendered while you type and the source is always one keystroke away.
What it does
The window, menus, text rendering and input handling are built on Win32, Direct2D and DirectWrite — no web view anywhere. The markers (**, #, []()) hide until the caret touches them.
The file on disk is the truth. SS Writer writes no markers of its own into a document, and everything it remembers about one — session, caret positions, folds, version history — lives in its own data folder.
Highlights
Markdown while you type
A WYSIWYG hybrid: markers appear only around the caret, tables are edited in place, headings fold from the gutter, and a .mmd file shows its Mermaid source with the live diagram under it.
Opens and writes real documents
Markdown, plain text, Mermaid, TextBundle, DOCX, ODT and RTF, plus legacy .doc on import; any other text file opens as plain lines coloured for its language, and JSON, XML and HTML can be formatted. Export to PDF, PNG, JPG, HTML, ePub, DOCX, ODT, RTF, TXT, Markdown with attachments and TextBundle. Every import reports what it could not represent.
A real Windows 11 window
Custom title bar with tabs, Mica Alt backdrop, system light and dark themes with the live accent colour, per-monitor DPI, file associations, a preview handler and UI Automation on every control.
Nothing is lost
Atomic saves with retries on sharing violations, external change detection, deduplicated version history kept for 30 days, emergency save on a crash and full session restore.
